Using Lexia Core5 Reading at Home: Information for Parents & Families

Overview

What is Core5? (Pre-K-5)

Lexia® Core5® Reading is a fun, computer-based program that has helped millions of students improve their literacy skills.

The activities in Core5 support and build on classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

How does Core5 work?

  • Students begin the online program at a starting point that is right for them based on the results of a brief placement activity.
  • Progress and performance in the program are reported directly to teachers so that they can provide assistance when needed.
  • Paper-and-pencil and hands-on activities are used for practicing and extending skills.
  • Achievement certificates are earned when students complete levels. These are an opportunity to celebrate success and talk about newly-gained skills.

What skills does Core5 teach my child?

Core5 provides a structured and systemic approach to six critical areas of reading:
  • Phonological Awareness - recognizing sounds in words
  • Phonics - understanding the connection between sounds and letters.
  • Structural Analysis - recognizing meaningful parts in words
  • Fluency - reading smoothly and with expression
  • Vocabulary - understanding word meanings and relationships
  • Comprehension - understanding spoken and written language

How do I support my child’s learning with Core5?

Schedule Time for Learning

  • Try to set a schedule that will help your reader reach this target each week. Total time will be between 75–135 minutes per week.
  • When students log in to Core5, they'll see their personalized weekly goal on their dashboard. Look for the goal icon on the dashboard.
  • Pre-K: 15-20 minutes per week
  • Grade 1+: 20-80 minutes per week

Set up for Success

  • Try to provide a quiet space for learning, and check the volume before each session. Headphones can be helpful but aren’t necessary.
  • Let your child work in Core5 without help from parents, siblings or other caregivers. Core5 is designated to give support and instruction that helps students when they need it.
  • Remind your child to work through an entire unit before moving on to another activity or leaving the program. The green bar at the bottom of the screen will move all the way to the right when the unit is finished.
  • Tell your child to log out completely when they are finished with the program by selecting the red X in the upper right corner of the screen.

Check In and Track Progress

  • Watch the apple icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. This apple will turn red if your child is struggling with an activity or concept.
  • Does your child know the directions and how the task functions? It may be helpful to explain the directions in your own words. The Core5 Buttons Guide will help you understand how the program functions.
  • Discourage rushing or guessing by encouraging your child to take their time before choosing an answer. Encourage your child to keep trying—learning takes time!
