Using Lexia PowerUp Literacy at Home: Information for Parents & Families

What is PowerUp? (Grades 6-12)

Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® is a computer-based program that adapts instruction to the specific needs of adolescent learners.

The activities in PowerUp support and build on your school's English Language Arts curriculum, focusing on developing reading skills in three areas: word study, grammar, and comprehension.

How does PowerUp work?

  • Students begin at a point in each area of the program that is right for them based on the results of a brief set of placement activities.
  • Each week student get a weekly goal of 25-45 minutes in each of the three areas of the program: Word Study, Grammar, and Comprehension. This weekly goal decreases over time as students make progress.
  • Progress and performance in the program are reported directly to teachers so that they can provide assistance when needed.
  • Paper-and-pencil and hands-on activities are used for practicing and extending skills.

What skills does PowerUp teach my learner?

PowerUp uses a structured and systematic approach to filling in skill gaps for adolescent learners. The program is broken up into three main skill areas since students may have different needs in each:
  • Word Study - Students develop reading accuracy and fluency by focusing on sound and syllable patterns in words.
  • Grammar - Students learn how written language works in order to improve their writing and reading comprehension. They learn how parts of speech function in sentences and how sentence parts convey meaning.
  • Comprehension - Students learn skills & strategies to become independent and strategic readers. Passages include orignial and authentic texts of multiple genres including informational texts, narratives, drama, and poetry.

How do I support my child’s learning with PowerUp?

Schedule Time for Learning

There’s a lot you can do to help your child get the most out of their time using PowerUp.
  • When learners log in to PowerUp, they'll see a personalized weekly goal for each area of the program on their dashboard.
  • Try to set a schedule that will help your reader reach this target each week. Total time will be between 75–135 minutes per week.

Set up for Success

  • Try to provide a quiet space for learning, and check the volume before each session. Headphones can be helpful but aren’t necessary.
  • Finishing a unit before moving on is important to ensure usage minutes are accurate. The green progress bar at the bottom of the page fills up when the unit is complete.
  • Tell your reader to log out completely when they are finished with the program by selecting the Log Out button in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Remind your reader to use the hints button when available. This button is located in the upper right of the screen and provides access to an anchor chart (summary of the skill) and any instructional image or video that is appropriate.
  • It is important to let your reader work in PowerUp without help from parents, siblings or other caregivers. PowerUp was built to provide help and instruction to students when they need it. Encourage your reader to keep trying--learning takes time!

Check In and Track Progress

  • Encourage your reader to set goals for their work in PowerUp and make decisions regarding their reading. They can select the skill area they wish to work on during any given session. You can help them monitor their usage and progress by clicking on the Your Progress tile.
  • Ask to see how many units your reader has completed today, this week, and all time. Praise them for careful and continued progress.

Celebrate Success

  • Talk to your reader about their progress in PowerUp by asking them about their favorite strands, passages or activities.
  • Celebrate success when your reader completes a level! Certificates in English and Spanish are available to celebrate this accomplishment.
